[includes excerpt from the Tribune, Oct. 17] Mr. Terry the Methodist minister very kindly came up yesterday and invited Mr. Sawyer to preach in his church today which he did and I am sure he will always remember with satisfaction this simple act of Christian courtesy. Mr. Sawyers remarks were in [?] simple and touching from the text "Thou shalt treat thy neighbor as thyself." I think the spirit of [?] dwelt in that house through all the [?] had letters yesterday from Eastman Johnson, Gifford, Church, Mrs. Pychouska, Whitelaw Reid and many others. Today I have written to Alice for the first time and I have told her not to grieve me by grieving for me, or by any unavailing regrets, and that I am happier and calmer than I thought it possible to be.
