The Jervis McEntee Diaries - May 22, 1878

Diary Entry:

Maurice came in today while Booth was sitting to me as Brutus and told me of the death of poor dear Dwight. They had a telegram last night briefly announcing it. His father had established him in business in Rockland Maine when he was attacked with typhoid fever. They got him home and he died on Tuesday I think. I felt a wave of desolation sweep over me to know I am never to see him again. He passed his childhood with us and it seems like taking one from our very midst. It is sad to think of our young people leaving their babyhood behind them but to know that one of them is gone forever brings such solemnity to life. I wrote to Gussie and yesterday I wrote to John Wolfer to tell him of my sympathy for him. Downing received a telegram from Joe telling him to go to Rondout to await instructions from him as to coming out there. This was before Dwight died and he did not hear of it until he reached Rondout where he went tonight.
