The Jervis McEntee Diaries - March 30, 1878

Diary Entry:

Varnishing day at the Academy. Strange faces. Few of the old artists. My only picture "Over the hills and far Away" hung in one of the best places. Had a hot argument with Coleman. He thinks original men failures. Says he despises American Art. And when I do original things I do my worst things. We both said bitter things. But why argue. Coleman is essentially a follower, not a leader, not an original man. Whittredge and I went down town to invest the Irving fund. Did not finish it.
