Calvert and I went to Bryant and Miss Bryants reception last evening about 5 oclock. There was a great crowd of people and the street was full of carriages. In the evening we went to the Century. Booth came in today. Looked at the little pictures and said they looked as well as ever. Is coming to sit for me Wednesday. He begins a six weeks engagement here on Monday. He staid two hours and we talked all the while. Today I wrote on my essay until 1 o'clock when I went up to Taylors to dine. No one there but their own family including Lily who goes back to Vassar tomorrow. I always enjoy Taylor. He has a good many of the same worries that I have but he is hopeful and encouraging and I always come from him with a higher valuation of myself. Mrs Taylor who edits the next paper at the Fraternity read me her essay on "Ceramics" treated in a vein of delicate sarcasm. It was charmingly written and carried through it a noble plea for true art. Wrote to Gertrude. Bowyer has just come from Mr. Braces and Julia Vaux is decidedly better which is a great relief. Went to the Taylors again in the evening. Mrs. Youmans was there also Mr & Mrs. Bolta and later Mrs. Shillaber and her sister came. Mrs. Shillaber struck me as possibly an ambitious woman of not much cultivation. Taylor and I smoked a cigar after they all left and had a talk.
