Tried to paint but couldn't. Put on my hat and went up town to exchange my spectacles which I discovered had a flaw in them and from there went to the Academy. Quite a number of people there. Met McClure who used to be Church's man. Had not been in N.Y. for several years. Thought the Exhibition much better than it used to be. Sent Gertrudes Scotch song book to her today by Express. Moore called with an Englishman a Mr. Butterfield who did not impress me very favorably. Had been in Italy but talked too much about "my friend Prince so and so" and had a dyed and waxed moustache. Now I should like to find out if I am too suspicious. There is something about a true gentleman which one accepts unconditionally. I found myself criticizing this man involuntarily.
