Wrote to Beard a day or two ago and insisted upon the necessity of making liberal sales from this collection if they ever hoped to get another at all comparable to it together. This will be cold water upon their enthusiasm but I cant help it, it is time. Have tried to paint but am in no mood. My mind is too filled with worries about the future which I cannot get rid of. I cant get into a quiet contemplative state of mind and some times it seems to me I never will again. It does seem wrong that our temporal interests take so much of our time and thought. I think I could be comparatively free as regards myself for I grow daily more and more to realize its value, but we are all linked to the fortunes and interests of others to which we cannot be indifferent. The weather has been cool and Autumnal for several days. A cold rain is falling today and we have a fire in the grate in the large room. The Literary Club met at Edgar Newkirks last night. The Essay was to have been read by Esray but he did not put in any appearance and the meeting resulted in transacting some business.
