It rained on Friday and we have cool weather ever since. Last night and today it has been too cool for comfort in the house away from the fire. I went to hear Mr. Blauvelt preach today in the Baptist church. His text was the servants to whom were entrusted the talents and he applied to it the possession of wealth in this world as implying responsibilities. The matter was well enough but by no means what I expected to hear from him while the manner was very bad, a sudden transition from low to sharp abrupt tones. This man puzzles me for in conversation he does not at all impress me as the man who is capable of the intellectual effort embodied in his papers on Modern Scepticism. I cannot judge him fairly until I know him better.
