Diary Entry:
Saturday, Dec 27, 1873- It has snowed nearly all day. Downing went out hunting and returned at noon with the usual luck. I have been thinking a great deal lately about figure painting and would practice it if I could decide upon the best way of proceeding. I should like very much to be able to paint figures and see no reason why I could not. Today I made a sketch of a head of a young girl from a pencil sketch I made, a recollection of a face I saw in the choir of the Methodist church. If I could get models, which is the part I dread I am sure I could work with great pleasure. Rec'd a note from Bret Harte in which he says he will be glad to come stay with us. It is snowing violently as we go to bed.
