Sunday, Dec 14, 1873- This is said to be the shortest day of the year and henceforth we may begin to look forward to the summer far off as it may be. The short grey days are dear to me and I do not regret them and it has always been a satisfaction to me that I can enjoy the winter equally with the summer. Wrote to Mary and to Calvert acknowledging receipt of the cheque he sent me. Wrote to Knoedler for some retouch varnish and to Sara. Finished "Les Trois Mousquetaires" and commenced Franklins autobiography. I never had a very great admiration for Franklin. I wonder if my prejudices will be overcome. Took a walk in the evening. Met Joe Tubby who went along.
