Saturday, Mar. 22, 1873- The great event of the day the execution of Foster occured yesterday. Governor Dix I think has the support of the best sentiment in refusing to interfere with the sentence. I attended the funeral of Whittredges little baby yesterday. Gifford and I went with him to Woodlawn Cemetery. In the evening I went to a very nice party at Mrs. Bullards. Mr & Mrs. Runkle were there whom I had not seen for four or five years. I was also introduced to Kate [Field?] and to Mrs. Bradley. Kate Field said she had been in my studio several times. Miss Nelly Hutchinson was there. Mrs. Louise Chandler Moulton to whom the party was given, Mr & Mrs. H. M. Field, Stedman, Whitelaw Reid, the inevitable Swayne Gifford, Col. Hay, and several others.
