Collection Summary: 22 interviews on 39 audio cassettes conducted by David McCarthy, 1989-1991, as part of his research for his Ph.D. dissertation, "Compromised positions: situations for the nude in American painting, 1955-1980," University of Delaware, 1992. Interviewees include William Theophilus Brown, Wynn Chamberlain, John Clem Clarke, Allan DArcangelo, Tibor de Nagy, Martha Edelheit, Paul Georges, Shirley Gorelick, Hilton Kramer, Alfred Leslie, Philip Pearlstein, Mel Ramos, Larry Rivers, Joan Semmel, Irving Sandler, Peter Saul, Sylvia Sleigh, Bob Stanley, James S. Strombotne, Sidney Tillim, Neil Welliver, and Tom Wesselmann. Also included is an interview on microcassette conducted by McCarthy of Ed Ruscha about H. C. Westermann, 1998.

Biographical/Historical Note: David Patterson McCarthy (1960- ) is an art history professor at Rhodes College, in Memphis, Tennessee.
