Donated 2002 by Sue Pirece as part of the Nanette L. Laitman Documentation Project for Craft and Decorative Arts in America. Sue Pierce gathered this material in the course of organizing the "Full Deck" exhibition. In 1992, Pierce asked 54 art quilters to each pick one unique playing card and interpret the card in quilt form using a standard size and thickness. The result was a theme exhibition, "Full Deck Art Quilts", that conveyed the expressive possibilites and vitality of American art quilts. The exhibition, which premiered in 1995 at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, was circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) across the country.
