    Agnes Anne Abbot papers, 1897-1976

    Biographical materials, correspondence, financial records, sketchbooks, photographs, writings, and printed material.

    Included are: an Italian visa, 1897, and museum pass, 1927, displaying a photograph of Abbot; correspondence, 1924-1951, primarily with family and friends, but containing 2 letters, ca. 1932, from Alfred Barr, one of which advises Abbot about who to contact in Paris; travel receipts and notes on finances, 1927-1965; 47 photographs of miscellaneous works of art and 5 of works of art shown at the Jewett Arts Center, Wellesley, Mass., 1960; 6 slides of watercolors by Abbot; a 3 p. typescript about the art department at Wellesley College during the 1920s-1940s; a printed announcement to tourists about Jerusalem, 1964; and a clipping, 1968.

    Ten volumes of sketchbooks, (1 unbound), 1921-1965, illustrating Abbot's travels in the United States and abroad; contain drawings of street scenes, city and landscapes, sculptural and architectural details, people, and animals made during Abbot's travels in the United States and abroad. 7 of the 10 sketchbooks (including unbound volume) are of Italy. Also included are sketches of Germany (including one entitled "Nazis collecting" that depicts Nazi soldiers with donation buckets on a street with pedestrians), Spain, Africa, and within the U.S. rural scenes of Colorado and Iowa.
