Sketchbook detail, 1934-40, p. 55 of 91. Margaret Casey Gates Papers, Archives of American Art
Landscape is the subject of the current Archives of American Art Journal.
The pastel sketch on the cover comes from the Sketchbook of Margaret Casey Gates. It depicts the hills of St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. Gates made this sketch of the island when she visited the Caribbean in 1936 with other artists, including her husband Robert Franklin Gates, Prentiss Taylor, and Steve Dohanos.
St. Thomas had recently been made a territory of the United States, and the artists were on assignment for the Treasury Department, which had commissioned them to make paintings for government buildings there. In John Gernand’s 1979 Oral History Interview, Gernand discusses the artists’ 1936 trip.
In addition to her sketchbooks, The Margaret Casey Gates Papers contain numerous photographs of the islands and of the artists at work and play.
